Superheroes race in aid of Comic Relief

STAFF at a Hull clothing store have been using their superpowers to raise money for Comic Relief.

Batman, Spiderman, Superman and friends from TK Maxx took part in a wheelbarrow race across the Humber Bridge to raise cash for the charity.

Manager Rosemarie Smith said the team of eight, who competed against stores from Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Doncaster and Barnsley, enjoyed the day.

She said: "It was a lot of fun. We worked as team and it was great to wear the costumes, which were donated by Costume Crazy in Hedon.

"Comic Relief is a fantastic charity that helps people here as well as Africa, and we want to raise as much money as we can.

"We are still collecting sponsorship money, but hope to make 300 from the event."

TK Maxx, in St Stephen's shopping centre, is holding other fundraising events to reach its 1,000 fundraising target.

Stores are also selling Comic Relief T-shirts nationwide.

Red Nose Day takes place on Friday, March 18.

People are being urged to get involved and do something funny for money.

The Mail is teaming up with Comic Relief to distribute a 50,000 Red Nose Day Community Cash fund to organisations across the region.

Grants of between 500 and 1,000 are available to groups helping to transform lives.

Parent and toddler groups, community festivals and groups for befriending for older and isolated people are just some of the organisations or events that could benefit from the fund.

Groups that received grants from Comic Relief last year included Hull Family Action Group, which offers families in the Newington area of west Hull the chance to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

Groups have until noon on Friday, March 11, to apply for Red Nose Day Community Cash.

The Two Ridings Community Foundation, an independent charity, will chair a specially-formed grant allocation committee to decide which organisations are the most deserving.
