Jean receives special community award

COMMUNITY worker Jean Case received a special award from Notts Police at the Chief Constable's Awards this week.

She has been awarded the Jean Varnam Community Award, which was established in honour of the former magistrate member of the Police Authority, Jean Varnam OBE, who died in 2004.

Jean Case has worked in the Sneinton area for many years.

Three years ago she ran the Youth Inclusion Project in the area which dealt with young people who had been excluded from schools.

In 2009 she started work with the Oliver Hind Youth Club, providing facilities for young people to keep them off the streets.

Last summer, Jean secured 10,000 to provide a summer programme for the youth club, making it possible for children to try water sports, visit Alton Towers, Drayton Manor and the National Climbing Centre.

This year she campaigned for a project to be set up to provide training or employment for young people, many who have had ASBOs.

A police spokesperson said: "Jean has a tremendous relationship with young people in the area who respect and love her and want to live up to the potential she sees in them.

"Her contribution has been central to the reduction in crime and antisocial behaviour in Sneinton. Young people are energised by her and all the agencies who work in Sneinton treasure her contribution."
