Alleyway sex attack leaves town in shock as police study CCTV footage

RESIDENTS have spoken of their shock after a woman was subjected to a terrifying sex attack by a stranger.
The 27-year-old was attacked in an alleyway between Itlings Lane and Florence Avenue in Hessle.
Police have stepped up patrols and have been carrying out house-to-house inquiries along the two streets after the attack last Thursday between 7pm and 9pm.
Detectives are now studying CCTV footage handed in by a shopkeeper.
Val Humphreys, who own a shop on the corner of Itlings Lane, said everyone was now being extra-cautious.
She said: "Everyone has been worried since it happened
"It is really not nice to think this has happened on our doorstep.
"You never think things like this happen to you.
"I was walking through there only the day before, a lot of people use the cut-through.
"It is a horrible thing to happen."
Mrs Humphreys said she had spoken to police and her husband had handed over CCTV footage in a bid to help detectives.
And one woman, who did not want to be named, said she had been double-checking the door ever since she found out about the attack.
"My partner works away and I've been a lot more worried since finding out about the attack," she said.
"At night I check and double check the door, I have been making sure the chain is on several times before going to bed.
"I shouldn't feel like this but it is scary to think someone got attacked so close to where we live.
"It is usually so peaceful and quiet around here."
A man, who also wished to remain anonymous, said his wife was so fearful that she only felt safe at night if she took her dog with her.
He said: "It is definitely worrying."
A spokeswoman for Humberside Police, told the Mail that no officer was available to talk about the assault.
Councillor Bob Tress, who represents Hessle, has urged caution.
He said: "Sexual assaults are very rare anyway but in Hessle even more so.
"I am, of course, very sorry to hear that someone has been through something like that, it is truly horrific.
"People need to be vigilant and wary if someone is out there but they have to try and carry on as normal. Again, thankfully this is very rare.
"We've got five great PCSOs who walk the streets as well, hopefully those patrols will be stepped-up, if only to offer reassurance."
Police can be reached on 01482 597866 quoting log 338 of February 20.
Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
