Pub seeking to take on apprentice in support of Post campaign

CALLING all budding Jamie Olivers or Gordon Ramsays: this could be the opportunity you've been waiting for.

A Notts pub is looking to take on an apprentice chef in support of a Nottingham Post campaign.

Craig Smith, owner of the Four Bells, in Woodborough, says the candidate will be fully trained up and, if successful, could land a job at the end of the apprenticeship.

He said: "We only took over the pub in October, and since then we have been busy creating a new menu.

"We have two full-time members of our kitchen staff but we would like another chef, as we are starting to get busy.

"I have had experience of employing apprentices before, at other bars and restaurants I have run. They are a great way of finding and training up new staff to the standard you expect."

The Four Bells is the latest firm to make a pledge to take on an apprentice as part of the Nottingham Post's 100 in 100 campaign. With Notts and Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce, we set out to find 100 apprentice places in 100 days.

We hit the target yesterday in just 43 days and are now aiming for 150 places.

We are calling on firms in Notts to follow the lead of others by making a pledge to take on an apprentice.

The apprenticeship at the Four Bells would be supported by New College Nottingham.

All-round training will be given, including fish and meat preparation and sauce and dessert making, as well as health and hygiene legislation.

Mr Smith added: "Our menu is completely fresh and comes from all-English ingredients.

"We want to have everything cooked from fresh and with locally-sourced food. That is very important to us and we will make sure the apprentice is well briefed in that.

"Our apprentice will work 30 hours a week with us, and no doubt some time completing modules at the college.

"At the end of that, if everything is successful, then a full-time job will be on offer."
