Auburn vs. Virginia: 5 Things We Learned from the Chick-Fil-a Bowl

ATLANTA - Auburn took on Virginia in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, and thanks to a strong running game, the Tigers took care of the Cavaliers 43-24.

It was a good win for the Tigers because it will gives them momentum going into the 2012 season as well as the 2012 Chick-fil-A kickoff game when they face Clemson.

However, Virginia did play well, and head coach Mike London showed why he was named ACC Coach of the Year.

Here are five things to take away from the bowl game played at the Georgia Dome.

BCS Bowl 2012: New Year's Resolutions for Each BCS Bowl Team

It is that time of year when people sit down and determine their goals and aspirations for the new year. Some choose to lose weight, save more money and build more friendships. However, for these eight football teams it is much deeper than a few pounds shed—it is about the future of their football programs.

For LSU and Alabama it is simply about winning their next football game. For others it is about taking the next step in their progression.

If these eight teams are able to fulfill this list it will be a great year for the players, coaches and fans of their respective teams.

Brock Lesnar: Twitter Explodes with Reaction to UFC Legend's Retirement

Just like that, a brutal kick from Alistair Overeem sent Brock Lesnar into retirement.

OK, maybe the diverticulitis had something to do with it, but either way, the baddest man on the planet's return to the ring was far too short lived.

While many expected Overeem to come away with a victory, it's hard to imagine anyone saw Lesnar's immediate retirement following the fight as a possibility.

One of the most recognizable faces of the UFC won't be entering the Octagon anymore.

Naturally, Twitter is exploding, as everyone has something to say about the premature retirement of the former champ.

Update: Saturday, December 31st at 9:58 a.m. EST

While this was a horrible outcome for Lesnar, Overeem's stock as a fighter just went through the roof. MMA fighter Derek Brunson speaks on Overeem's potential?

Update: Saturday, December 31st at 9:47 a.m. EST

Upon retiring, Lesnar prompted many to think he would be making a return to the WWE. Bleacher Report's very own Tom Kinslow isn't buying it.

Those who didn't get to see the fight live and were frantically checking Twitter for updates had to be stunned when SportsCenter cranked out this Tweet.

Rod Welton shares the frustration of many fans who shelled out the money for the short-lived fight.

WWE's Chris Jericho decided to run his mouth a bit about not only Lesnar, but the UFC itself. Pay particular attention to the hashtags.

The Fake ESPN states the obvious here. Lesnar hasn't been Lesnar for a long time. His official retirement may have come after a brutal kick to the stomach by Overeem, but he was done before he entered the Octagon.

UFC commentator Jon Anik points out the positive impact Lesnar had on UFC during his brief but spectacular career.

RUMOR: Alex Rodriguez's New Girlfriend Is A Former Playboy Model And Professional Wrestler

alex rodriguez and torrie wilson

Alex Rodriguez was in Boise, Idaho over the Christmas holiday with his maybe girlfriend Torrie Wilson, according to the Idaho Statesman.

Wilson is a former Playboy cover model, WWE wrestler, and I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! cast member.

The two were spotted working out together at a Boise gym.

They were also probably photographed in Cabo together, Larry Brown Sports points out.

A-Rod has had a busy offseason: he went to Germany to get some of Kobe Bryant's knee steroids, and now he's gallivanting around Big Sky country with a wrestler.

Wisconsin Just Unveiled The Flower-Filled Uniforms They're Going To Wear In The Rose Bowl

Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 Rose Bowl Uniform

The Wisconsin Badgers aren’t flashy.

They are not the wacky brainchild of Phil Knight.

They are not a constant experiment in cutting-edge design.

But they are a tremendous football team. And headed to the Rose Bowl for a second consecutive year.

So Adidas, the University of Wisconsin's official team outfitter, produced their own Nike-esque design to match the Star Wars fatigues jerseys of their Jan. 2 opponent, the Oregon Ducks.

No, the helmets don’t look like “liquid metal.” No, the numbers won’t change colors.

But the subtle design is just perfect for the unassuming Big 10 team.

And who says a 6-foot-8, 345 lbs. offensive lineman can't look good covered in roses?

Their uniform design remains largely unchanged, except for one noticeable difference...

There is a rose pattern inside the numbers

And in the helmet decal too

Terrell Owens Is Mulling A Return To Football, But Not In The NFL

terrell owens dallas star

Earlier this week, Terrell Owens made a plea on Twitter to play for the 49ers. But while the 49ers have not made an offer, T.O. does have an offer to play football, just not in the NFL.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, Owens is said to be considering an offer from the Allen (TX) Wranglers of the Indoor Football League...

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Owens is considering an offer that, according to the Wranglers’ website, would pay him in the range of $250,000 to $500,000 for one season of football lite.

The best we can tell, the IFL is like the Arena Football League, and has been around in some form since 2003.

Owens has been open about his financial troubles recently and it may be difficult for him to turn down a payday. And while he is still hoping for a return to the NFL, not a single team showed up to his workout in October.

Sunday Night's Massive Giants-Cowboys Game Gives Tony Romo Yet Another Chance To Prove He's Not A Fraud

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo

Sunday night marks the next biggest game in the career of Tony Romo as the Dallas Cowboys quarterback.

It’s a chance to finally prove he’s deserving of the star on his helmet. A chance to show Emmitt Smith he does have mental toughness.

It’s an opportunity to beat his team’s division rival New York Giants on the road and on the biggest stage with the NFC East crown up for grabs.

A Cowboys loss would simply fulfill Romo’s ongoing narrative of coming up small in big games.

A win – swollen throwing hand and all – and Romo quells all the naysayers, haters and doubters.

For one more week.

Such is life as the signal-caller of America’s Team.

Until Romo hoists a Lombardi Trophy, he will never be considered an elite quarterback.

The skepticism is valid. The history is there. It began with a botched field goal snap against the Seattle Seahawks. It continued in 2007 when, after a 13-3 regular season, Romo threw a game-ending interception to these very Giants in the playoffs.

Romo’s been in this very position before – in essentially a one-game playoff to capture the division crown. Week 17 of the 2008 season concluded in a 44-6 drubbing to the Philadelphia Eagles

It was one of the most humiliating and embarrassing performances I’d ever witnessed.

Will this Sunday be any different?

Judging by his performance this season, the answer could be yes, no or maybe.

Romo cost his team multiple games earlier this season with unthinkable throws against the New York Jets and Detroit Lions. He’s also shown the physical toughness that’s always endeared him to teammates by returning to a game with a punctured lung to defeat the San Francisco 49ers – one of just their three losses.

In fact, Romo is playing the best football of his career. His 102.2 quarterback rating – fourth in the NFL – is the highest of his six seasons under center. Excluding his 2010 injury-shortened season, this year’s nine interceptions match the lowest total of his career.

But none of that matters. Not his playoff failures. Not his highlight reel plays.

All that matters is that he beat the Giants in MetLife Stadium on a brisk New Year’s night to send his Cowboys to the playoffs.

“I’m anxious for our team to get out there and play a great game,” Romo told ESPNDallas.com. “I’m excited we’re in this position and we have an opportunity to go and play in a big game like this. This is fun.”

Should Romo have the last laugh we can expect and enjoy this debate to resume Monday morning.

NBA Sleepers: 6 Players Impressing Early

After a brief training camp, the NBA is now in full swing. Some coaches will have to create a rotation on the fly, creating new opportunities for players across the league.

These six sleepers have found a niche early. They are producing for their real teams, and if you are looking for some help in the fantasy game, could produce for yours as well.

Do not miss out on these fast starters.

Rangers waive Avery

From NHL.com:

New York Ranger forward Sean Avery is reportedly back on the waiver wire, just as he was prior to the start of the 2011-12 season.

According to a tweet from ESPNNewYork.com?s Katie Strang, the Rangers waived Avery on Friday. TSN?s Bob McKenzie confirmed the move on his Twitter account.

Avery hasn?t played since Dec. 10, a total of nine straight games, and has played in only 15 games since he was recalled from Connecticut of the American Hockey League in early November. He has three goals, a plus-2 rating and 21 penalty minutes.

Avery was among the Rangers final cuts prior to their season-opener in Stockholm against Los Angeles. He cleared waivers and was assigned to Connecticut, but he was later recalled by the Rangers on Nov. 1. Avery had to clear re-entry waivers in order to return to the club.

The NBA Created A Twitter Handle To Justify Dwyane Wade's Game-Winning Shot

Dwyane WadeHardwood Paroxysm posted a video earlier today as part of their “Have Ball, Will Travel” video series dissecting – what should have been – Dwyane Wade’s illegal travel on Wednesday night’s game-winning shot against the Charlotte Bobcats

And we agreed.

But there was one group that didn’t: the NBA.

The league office created the Twitter Handle, @NBAOfficials, Thursday afternoon which will, according to the webpage, tweet rule clarifications and updates.

Their first post linked to an NBA.com webpage explaining that Wade’s dribble-drive was, in fact, “a legal basketball move.”

For some, the NBA’s defense of the play may still be up for argument.

But the league’s proactive and creative decision to be more transparent with its refereeing decisions – if actually continued – should be universally approved.

Boston Red Sox Rumors: Ryan Kalish Surgery Complicates Right Field

The Opening Day right fielder is again a mystery for the Boston Red Sox after Boston.com reported that Ryan Kalish underwent shoulder surgery in November and will not be ready until May or June. Boston just sent outfielder Josh Reddick to Oakland as part of a five-player deal that brought closer Andrew Bailey to the Red Sox. Reddick manned right field for 56 games last season, after JD Drew was sidelined with injuries.

In 2010, Kalish got the nod over Reddick and hit .252/.305/.405 in 53 games. Kalish opened the 2011 season in Triple-A Pawtucket but was injured for nearly the entire season.

The trade for Bailey also brought outfielder Ryan Sweeney to Boston and it was thought that he, along with Kalish and other role players, would split time in right field to open the season. Now, things will be different as Kalish won't be ready. Other outfielders on the 40-man roster include Darnell McDonald, Mike Aviles and prospect Che-Hsuan Lin but none of them are capable of playing right field full time.

Kalish's injury is going to give GM Ben Cherington a big decision to make; either wait until Kalish is healthy and use Sweeney and others in the meantime OR sign a free agent to fill the void.

Two interesting free agents that Boston could pursue are Cody Ross and Ryan Spilborghs. Both are right-handed bats who would compliment a lefty-heavy Boston lineup. Spilborghs is more of a contact hitter who doesn't have much power and would probably split time with Sweeney. Ross, on the other hand, has good power and would be able to play on an everyday basis.

Another player that could fall into the mix is Cuban outfielder Yoennis Cespedes. Cespedes is a five-tool player that will be available for negotiations in early 2012. He is going to cost a lot to acquire, whereas Ross or Spilborghs would be cheap for the most part.

It seems that Boston is confident that Kalish will be the right fielder of the future as long as he stays healthy, so a long-term acquisition isn't foreseeable.

No matter what Cherington decides to do, the right field position is definitely a complicated situation.

Valero Alamo Bowl: 1st Quarter Update, Baylor 21 Washington 7

It appears, at the end of the first quarter of the Valero Alamo Bowl, that the romp is on!

Robert Griffin III is showing exactly why he won the Heisman Trophy. The Baylor offense has run 30 offensive plays, moved the ball for 245 yards and RG3 is 12-of-14 passing.

In Washington's defense, sorry that's a poor choice of words; I think the Washington defense is still at the hotel waiting on the team bus. However, on offense, they have put a touchdown on the board, have 78 yards total offense and at least seem to be trying.

At this point in the game, Washington is either going to get things going and make the game competitive or they're going to be on the losing end of one of the biggest routs in college football bowl game history.

Stay tuned!

2011 NFL Playoffs: Which Team Poses the Biggest Threat to the Baltimore Ravens?

The Baltimore Ravens enter Week 17 with an 11-4 record.

With a win at Cincinnati in the 2011 regular season finale, the Ravens will clinch a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs (that coupled with a Patriots loss vs. Buffalo will give the Ravens the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC).

Still, with one week to go, there are many playoff scenarios that could unfold.

In the AFC, the No. 4 seed (AFC West champion) and the No. 6 seed are still up for grabs.

But for the Ravens, it's simple: beat the Bengals, get a much-needed week off, then see who you will host in the divisional round.

Who will they play in the postseason?

If you're a Ravens fan, who do you want them to play in the postseason?

This slideshow will rank the five teams the Ravens will likely have to contend with in the AFC playoffs (5-easiest, 1-hardest), and how the Ravens might fare against them.

SPORTS CHART OF THE DAY: LeBron James Is Better Than He's Ever Been

The Miami Heat are off to a 3-0 start and are averaging 105.3 points per game. And watching the team, it is easy to see that they have come a long ways from the team that struggled early in the 2010-11 season when they averaged just 91.0 points per game in the first three games.

The Heat's new up-tempo "Pace and Space" offense is a big reason. And the biggest impact may be on LeBron James, who is now more dominant than ever.

James is averaging 32.7 points per game early on, which would be a career-high. But he is doing it by taking only 18.7 shots per game, which would be a career-low. The difference is LeBron has yet to take a 3-point shot, after averaging 3.5 3-point attempts last year. And he is getting to the free throw line (12.3 FTA) more than ever.

If LeBron can keep up this early pace, the 2011-12 season may just be one long victory lap for the Miami Heat..

Thus far, NFL teams have begged to differ.

But now that the 49ers have cut wide receiver Braylon Edwards, T.O. addressed the nonexistent rumor that San Francisco could pick him up for the playoffs, PFT reports.

Here's what he tweeted at Niners DB Donte Whitner, his former teammate in Buffalo:

Unfortunately for T.O., it's not going to happen.
