Age is nothing but a number for entrants

THERE are 65 years between them and their acts couldn't be more different.

Talent Trail's oldest entrant will be playing the harmonica, while one of the youngest competitors will be break-dancing.

Anthony Craven, 81, of Elstronwick, near Hedon, and Laura Brentamo, 16, of Albert Avenue in west Hull, are pitted against each other in one of the heats.

They have both entered the Mail's Talent Trail, sponsored by KC, to see if they can fend off the other contestants and walk off with the top prize.

Mr Craven is no stranger to the contest, having entered in 2008 and 2009.

He said: "I think the competition has more emphasis on youngsters.

"I just like to perform in front of an audience. The harmonica isn't the greatest-loved instrument in the world, but I've been playing for 40 years.

"I saw that organiser Liz Hugill was appealing for more men to enter – so I'm doing it for the guys."

Mr Craven will be performing three hits, including probably the most famous piece for the harmonica, the theme tune to Last Of The Summer Wine.

At the other end of the music scale is Laura's hip-hop dancing.

The self-taught performer has already won gold at the UDO Dance Competition in Bradford in December.

Laura, who attends Sydney Smith School in Anlaby, said: "I've been dancing for a while, I just taught myself.

"I can do flips and freezes, which is where you freeze in the air with only one hand on the ground.

"I've been practising and even made up some moves of my own."

The final of the competition will be held at Hull City Hall on May 17.

First prize will receive a trophy, 1,500, studio time and a photoshoot at Topcolour.

Second prize will receive 750 while third prize gets 250.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Mail's charity of the year, Dove House Hospice's Love You 2 Appeal.
