School now rated 'good' by Ofsted, two years after being put in special measures

AN EAST Riding school has been rated good with outstanding features – two years after coming out of special measures.

Hessle Penshurst Primary, which is now under the wing of Hessle High School in a federation link-up, is improving rapidly according to the education watchdog Ofsted.

Following a two-day inspection at the 280-pupil primary, Ofsted inspectors judged Penshurst to be a good school.

Inspector Terry McDermott said in his report: "It is improving rapidly, as the legacy of previous underachievement is being successfully eradicated.

"The school's close links with Hessle High School through the Hessle Federation are proving very beneficial to both establishments."

Executive head teacher Sarah Young, who is in charge of Penshurst and Hessle High School, said the primary's progress was testament to the support of parents, enthusiasm of pupils and commitment of staff.

Mrs Young works alongside Neil Butler, the head teacher of Penshurst Primary.

She said: "In little more than two years, we have gone from special measures to a good school with outstanding features, which is a tremendous achievement.

"We have changed the curriculum a lot and had a big focus on attendance, leadership and management.

"The pupils are so enthusiastic about coming to school and they showed that to the inspectors."

Inspector Mr McDermott commented in his report: "All adults in the school firmly hold, and can convincingly explain, their vision for the future of the school.

"Through their dedication and persistence they are helping pupils to develop and learn well."

Inspectors praised the pupils' outstanding behaviour and said achievement has improved since the last inspection.

The quality of teaching and the curriculum is good and staff morale is high.

The inspection team found the safeguarding of pupils to be outstanding.

Mr McDermott reported: "The school has an outstanding strength in the exemplary quality of its safeguarding procedures.

"This is a key element of pupils' emotional security, is recognised by pupils and parents alike, underpins their outstanding behaviour and sustains their good personal development."

Ofsted said the governors had a good appreciation of the school's strengths and challenge leaders to address weaknesses.
