Gifted artist will be remembered

HER "Picasso-style" art made her a famous name in Hull and across the pond in New York.

Famous names such as Bob Marley, David Hasselhoff and Roland Gift, of the Fine Young Cannibals, have worn her clothes.

Now, the late Avenues artist Christina Woodhouse is being honoured in an exhibition of her work.

Known to many for her quirky designs which were sold from Christina Artwear in Princes Avenue, she clothed the trendy 20-somethings of the 1980s.

Since her death from cancer in January, aged 68, Christina's closest friends have wanted to do something to honour the painter and clothes designer.

Now, her T-shirts and paintings are being put on display at The Artbox in Newland Avenue, and a third of the proceeds will be donated to Dove House Hospice.

Catherine Morley, 67, said: "We were extremely close, the best of friends. She was the structure of my life and it is very peculiar without her.

"She was a very dedicated artist and a very good one.

"She did all sorts of different works and she put a lot of effort into everything she produced. She painted every day.

"Christina was a very sensitive person and was very strong."

Christina originally lived in Hull, but moved around the world, spending time in Canada and New York. In the 1980s, she gave up her apartment, well-paid job and studio in America to move back to Hull.

It was then that she set up Christina's Artwear. She later sold items from the Innovation Centre, a converted warehouse in the city where people could start up small businesses and clothes from the pottery shop Studio 10.

She then spent a period in Arizona in the mid-1990s before moving back to Hull again six years ago. She had two daughters, Shelley and Andrea, who still live in the US.

Christina was the eldest of four girls and a boy.

Her sister Gill McWatt, 67, who lives in Hedon, said: "She was a free spirit and was always able to find a new path to go down. She was a very strong person."

The special window display will be running at The Artbox until Saturday.

Christina's work will still be on sale in the shop afterwards.

  1. I remember buying my shirt from her when she was at Tudio 10 in about 1985/6. I still have it and treasure it. I remember having to order it and waited about a month for it but it was so worth the wait. She was such a delight to talk to and I'm sorry to hear she has passed away. RIP sweet talented lady.

  2. I got a top and skirt from her and when a friend saw it, she wanted an outfit and after she got hers, we did a duet together, were she danced, whilst I sang The Body Electric from Fame
