Major children's heart unit could be shut by 'flawed' review

EAST YORKS: Parents face two-and-half hours on the road if plans to scrap the region's main children's heart unit are approved.

Health bosses are considering closing the heart surgery centre at Leeds General Hospital as part of a Government move to reduce the number of specialist services and improve quality.

Should the plans go ahead, parents in Hull and East Yorkshire face a two-and-a-half hour journey to Newcastle for care.

Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland urged Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to make an urgent statement on a "flawed" review proposing the closure, saying it contains factual errors about the centre.

He said: "Considering the huge importance of that wonderful unit to nearly 14 million people, may we have an urgent statement from the Secretary of State for Health on the credibility of the options that have been put forward on the basis of flawed information?"
