EAST YORKS: A teenager who killed his ex-girlfriend's kitten has escaped an immediate jail sentence.
Matthew Falkingham slammed the two-month-old cat called Daisy against the wall out of spite after his lover ended their relationship.
The 19-year-old was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 12 months, at Beverley Magistrates' Court on Monday.
The pet's distraught owner, Stacie Baker, received a chilling text from Falkingham that said: "I've killed your cat."
She rushed back to her home in Queens Road, Beverley, to find the young cat's lifeless body in a suitcase in her shed, on July 11 last year.
Falkingham had also destroyed hundreds of pounds worth of clothes and a mobile, which were covered in paint.
Falkingham, who lives in Dewsbury, was banned from keeping animals for five years, given a 12-month supervision order and ordered to carry out 150 hours' unpaid work.
RSPCA inspector Hannah Bryer said: "I very much hope the sentence passed sends the right message to him and anyone else who thinks this is acceptable behaviour."
