Hull City Council cuts senior management salaries budget to save 1m

HULL City Council is set to slash its senior management salary budget by almost 1 million.

The cash-strapped council has revealed a proposed new line-up featuring nine fewer posts than in July 2008, when the annual wage bill for managers stood at 2.5 million.

The new-look management structure, comprising 19 posts, is being proposed by chief executive Nicola Yates, and would put the council's salary bill for senior managers at 1.7 million.

The new structure was revealed today as the TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA) published its annual Town Hall Rich List.

The list shows 18 council managers in Hull earned more than 100,000 last year.

Nine senior officers in the East Riding also earned more than 100,000.

City council leader Carl Minns said the proposed new structure at the Guildhall showed the council was taking steps to reduce its senior management costs.

"We are heading in the right direction but we will continue to look to make savings in this area wherever possible," he added.

The new team mapped out by Mrs Yates includes three new posts, including head of partnership working, deputy director of business support, and deputy director of physical regeneration.

Details of their salary packages have yet to be announced.

Two existing posts in the council's management structure have already had revised job descriptions approved.

Andrew Allison, the TPA's Hull and East Riding co-ordinator, said: "Although both councils are reducing the number of senior officers, their pay is not going down.

"Our councils should be doing everything they can to drive down costs."

An East Riding Council spokesperson said there had been no increase in posts commanding over 100,000 at the authority over the past two years.
