Exhibition keeps Lincoln Castle Paddle Steamer plan afloat

SHE was the last paddle steamer to carry passengers across the Humber.

Now, passenger ferry the Lincoln Castle is being remembered at Hull Maritime Museum.

The last coal-fired paddle steamer in regular service in the UK, the Lincoln Castle operated between Hull and New Holland from 1941 until 1978 before being scrapped in October last year.

Lincoln Castle Preservation Society (LCPS) chairman Stephen Sharpe said: "It's vital we remember this missing piece of Hull's maritime history, especially as people will have fond memories of crossing the Humber on the Lincoln Castle."

Set up by the LCPS, the exhibition at Hull Maritime Museum features photographs and artefacts from the Lincoln Castle. There are also models of the vessel, created by society member David Pettingale.

Mr Sharpe, of west Hull, is certain the exhibition will encourage people to help resurrect the Lincoln Castle.

He said: "Thanks to the people of Hull, we raised 104,000 in 16 weeks to buy the Lincoln Castle last year. Sadly, the vessel's owner refused to sell and the boat was scrapped.

"We hope to raise 3.5 million to create a working replica, incorporating parts of the original. The replica, which will be launched in 2014, will, like the original, be used for pleasure trips."

Assistant curator of maritime history Tom Goulder said he was pleased the museumwas being used to remember Hull's history.

He said: "It's great that the Lincoln Castle Preservation Society is sharing its knowledge and enthusiasm by exhibiting at Hull Maritime Museum."

The LCPS hopes the exhibition will sustain interest in the Lincoln Castle and attract new members.

LCPS vice-chairman Ian Ingles said: "If you want to experience the sight, sound and smell of steam, join our society and help recreate the Lincoln Castle."
