Couple recognised for 40 years of first-aid work

A COUPLE from Hucknall have been recognised for their contribution to St John Ambulance after 40 years of first-aid work.

Eric and Doreen Allcock were made members of the Order of St John in a ceremony at 12th-century Priory Church in London.

People can only become members of the Order of St John if they have shown exceptional service to its one of its key foundations – including first aid charity St John Ambulance.

Each recipient of the Royal Order of Chivalry has to be approved by the Queen.

After the ceremony, Mr Allcock, 63, and Mrs Allcock, 61, showed off their certificates to fellow members of the Hucknall and Linby Division of St John's Ambulance.

The couple have been members of St John Ambulance for 40 years and continue to carry out first-aid duties at public events across Hucknall, Linby and Papplewick.

Both are in the third generation of their families to belong to St John Ambulance and their children are also involved.

Mr Allcock, who works in transport services for the East Midlands Ambulance Service, recently handed over the role of superintendent of the Hucknall and Linby Division to his son, Darren.

Mr Allcock said: "As well as providing first aid, which can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved, joining St John Ambulance gives you a great social life and we have made a lot of friends over the years."
