Hull scientist near power plant hit by Japanese quake may leave

A SCIENTIST from east Hull is considering leaving his Japanese home to get away from the nuclear power plant rocked by explosions after the quake.
Gary Richards, 35, originally from the Ings estate, is living in Tsukuba, a city about 100 miles south of the Fukushima plant.
He said: "Everybody is worried about the power station.
"The wind looks set to be come from that direction until the weekend."
Authorities at the stricken Fukushima facility, where a 12-mile exclusion zone has been set up, are attempting to prevent multiple reactor meltdowns.
Mr Richards said: "Some of my friends have already got flights out of Japan.
"I am considering evacuating to Osaka or Kyoto, further to the west.
"This is my biggest worry right now."
Mr Richards, who is about 200 miles from the epicentre of last Friday's quake, described the carnage.
He said: "I was in my office on the fourth floor when we started to feel the tremor. We're quite used to getting smallish tremors living in Japan, but my Japanese co-worker started to say 'dekai' meaning 'this is big'.
"The tremors just kept increasing. I got under my desk and books started to fall off the shelves. It was shaking so violently that I started to worry about the building collapsing.
"The electricity went off. I was just crouched under the desk as the things were falling and the shaking continued. It lasted two-to-three minutes.
"After the shaking stopped the office was a mess with books, monitors, shelves and computers fallen on the floor."

Mr Richards returned to work after the weekend, but was told to go home due to power cuts.

At times there has been no water and more power cuts are expected.

He added: "We are all very worried about the threat of another large aftershock – it could cause a lot of mess again, but I think the buildings here can withstand it.

"As far as I know, all the Brits are still here! Apparently, flight tickets to Europe are up to 4,000-5,000 euros."
