EAST YORKS: Thousands of people are continuing to give up smoking, according to figures released by the NHS Information Centre.
Figures for the Yorkshire and Humber region show 8,180 people successfully kicked the habit with help from NHS stop-smoking services between October and December last year.
They also show a further 15,314 people committed to kick the habit by setting a quit date.
Paul Johnston, regional director for public health at NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, the region's strategic health authority, said: "This is great news. The more people who decide to give up the better.
"Giving up smoking can be difficult, but these figures show that people are doing it every day and making a really positive impact on their long term health."
