Councillor retires after 24 years of service but promises to keep busy

A LONG-serving councillor is retiring from Rushcliffe Borough Council.

After 24 years as the councillor for Sutton Bonington, Terry Holt has decided not to seek re-election this May.

However, he has said he will carry on with his other interests, including his position as chairman of the East Midlands branch of Rail Future.

He campaigned for many years for the reopening of a rail station in the area.

When the 25 million East Midlands Parkway Station was opened in January 2009 by then Transport Minister Geoff Hoon, Mr Holt was top of the list when thanks were expressed at the official ceremony. For Mr Holt, it was the end of a two-decade campaign.

He had first called for the old train station in Kegworth to be reopened in 1989 and, when the Parkway Station eventually opened, he said: "I am delighted. This is far grander than anything I imagined."

Mr Holt, a member of the Great Central Railway at Loughborough, is very keen to see the electrification of the main line.

He has been heavily involved in introducing recycling measures by the borough council as well as a drainage scheme to reduce flooding in the Sutton Bonington area.

"It has been an interesting 24 years and I think I have been able to make a contribution during my time at Rushcliffe," he said.

"I still run a business from home and will continue with support for local organisations such as fund-raising for Save The Children.

"I intend to keep busy."
