EAST HULL: Wilberforce College and architects Morgan Lloyd Jones have won first prize in a building awards ceremony for a new teaching block at the Saltshouse Road college.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards is an annual event that celebrates constructional and architectural excellence across the UK.

The Q block at Wilberforce houses the health and caring department and was crowned 2011 winner for Best Commercial Project under �1million in South Yorkshire and the Humber.

Garrard Dennis, architect with Morgan Lloyd Jones, said, "We're really pleased the high standard of our work has been recognised by a national award scheme."

Stephan Jungnitz, principal, said: "It has provided us with valuable learning space and allowed us to accommodate the ever growing number of students who choose to study at our popular college."

EAST HULL: Elderly people in east Hull can join in bingo, dancing, day trips and much more at the Freedom Centre's over-55s club.

The group meets at the Preston Road centre on Wednesdays at 1.15pm.

HULL: Staff from a Chinese and Indian buffet restaurant paid a visit to the children at Hull Royal Infirmary this week.

More than 50 chocolate eggs were given out to patients in the children's ward by staff from Bombay Duck.

Janet Cotson, play specialist on the children's wards at Hull Royal Infirmary, said: "We would like to thank the staff at Bombay Duck for taking the time to think of children in hospital over Easter. The donation of Easter eggs is very much appreciated."

HULL: Schools in the city which took part in the world record for the most people singing a song simultaneously are being urged to return their witness statement forms.

The youngsters helped break the sign2sing Guinness World Record, which was organised by the charity SignHealth.

Steve Powell, chief executive at SignHealth, said: "We need the witness statement forms to send to Guinness so they can officially confirm we have broken the world record.

"So we're calling for all schools from the Hull area that took part to send in their paperwork to confirm they participated in the event. We believe almost 100,000 children participated in sign2sing but without the evidence we will be unable to verify the actual number."

HULL: Donations are being sought for the Echoes Foundation shops in the city.

Items including clothes, toys, DVDs, small furniture and others are needed.

The charity, which supports children with special and additional needs, has shops in Hessle Road and Newland Avenue.

The charity will also accept broken furniture or items which they can fix.

HULL: An open day is to be held for a city scooter club.

Hull Drifters scooter club will host its first open day on Saturday, June 18, at the Priory Inn.

It includes a bouncy castle and DJ and a raffle and runs from noon onwards. Families are welcome.
