Post Comment: Residents blow cold on turbines

THE battle lines are being drawn up over plans to build wind turbines next to the River Trent.

The controversial structures are planned for a site between Beeston Rylands and Clifton.

Members of both communities are upset by the prospect of the windmills within sight of their homes.

While some find these turbines pleasing on the eye, most would rather they were not next door.

And residents from both communities made that point firmly when they met representatives of the university this week.

They listed their concerns as noise, the close proximity to their homes, the impact on property prices and health fears.

Some of the residents were particularly riled by the idea that they would have to put up with the turbines, while the university would take all of the benefit.

We can see why this might needle those who will have the turbines in their eye line.

But the benefit of the turbines from the university's perspective is clear.

They will offset carbon emissions and future energy costs, as well as demonstrate the university's commitment to the environment, which is important given the institution's reputation for research into green energy and sustainable design.

As a developer, the university is demonstrating good practice. It is keeping people informed of its plans and giving them opportunity to comment before they submit them to Nottingham City Council.

But it is hard to see resolution of the conflict that appears to be looming. The university has been told this site is the only one suitable on its estate. And the residents don't want to influence the design of the turbines, they simply don't want them.
