A THUG has been locked up after he fractured a man's jaw and cheekbone with a single kick to his face.
Nathan Thomas, 20, joined in an attack on the man in the street after he had left the Regal nightclub, Nottingham Road, Ripley, last August.
One kick from his right foot left the man with the devastating injuries.
Nottingham Crown Court was told Thomas was arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm, which he admitted.
His victim, who is 44 and self-employed, had to have a metal plate inserted in his jaw at hospital and then needed two weeks off work to recover.
Now he is taking anti-depressants and sleeping tablets, the left side of his face is swollen and he suffers from flashbacks.
Lorraine Fox, prosecuting, told the sentencing hearing: "The victim hasn't been out into Ripley since.
"He has become overprotective of his son."
Judge James Sampson sentenced Thomas, of John Street, Ilkeston, to 12 months in custody.
He said the victim was already on the ground when Thomas joined in by kicking him to the face.
"The noise is described as horrendous as the kick landed and fractured the bone.
"The weapon here was your shod foot."
Thomas's friend had previously received four months in custody for his part in the attack, suspended for 12 months, and a curfew for common assault.
He had to do 100 hours of unpaid work and pay compensation of �50.
Thomas, who had no previous convictions for violence, had expressed his shame and remorse for what he had done.
He pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity at court.
Stuart Gosnell, in mitigation, said he worked hard and had a good job.
"He tells me he is appalled by what he did. He has thought long and hard how he was capable of kicking a man whilst he was on the floor.
"The only reason for that is the alcohol and substance misuse that night.
"His recollection of what happened is minimal.
"He has ceased binge drinking. He said to me the offence frightened him and he did not think he was capable of doing such a terrible thing to another person."
