Bring some colour into your streets by joining Hull In Bloom contest

KEEN gardeners are being urged to enter a competition to make east Hull look blooming marvellous.

The hugely-successful Park Area In Bloom is returning for 2011 and people are being urged to "say it with flowers" and bring some colour to their neighbourhoods.

The competition is open to residents, businesses, allotment holders, community groups and schools.

Part of the overall Hull In Bloom contest, it normally attracts the biggest entry in the city.

This year, the organisers are calling on schools and businesses to make their mark in east Hull.

One of last year's winners, Margaret Cundill, 58, of Westerdale Grove, not only took home the Park Area In Bloom title for her hanging baskets but went on to scoop the overall Hull In Bloom title. Mrs Cundill, who had hip replacement surgery 18 months ago and suffers arthritis, said she found building the baskets therapeutic.

She said: "I find doing the hanging baskets and watching them grow very absorbing.

"When they are in full bloom, they look absolutely marvellous. I am always in and out of the garden.

"I first entered Park Area in 2006 and winning last year was wonderful. My ambition now is to have my name on the trophy two years running.

"Winning it once has made me more competitive but that is not why I enter, it's because I get so much pleasure out of it."

Park Area In Bloom is being run by the charity, Environmental & Management Solutions Yorkshire Ltd (EMS), for the second year, in conjunction with Hull City Council's Park Area Team and the Preston Road Neighbourhood Development Company Ltd.

Jan Boyd, EMS chief executive, said: "Looking after their garden is a real passion for a number of residents, but taking part in Park Area in Bloom is something that everyone could do.

"I'd really love to see many more businesses, schools and community groups in the Park Area becoming involved.

"People don't have to spend a lot, it costs nothing to enter and colourful plants and flowers really lift the area.

"Over 80 residents attended last year's awards ceremony at the Freedom Centre so we are sure of a great night, come October."
