LABOUR failed to make inroads into the Conservative majority in Amber Valley, gaining just one borough council seat.
Fifteen seats were up for grabs – most of them in Tory strongholds, such as Duffield – with the uncontested southern parishes remaining Conservative.
It was a close call at Ripley, where there was a recount and the Conservatives retained the seat by just 14 votes.
Labour was left with 15 seats and leader Paul Jones said: "The results have seen us improve our share of the vote in most seats and so we are pleased with the day's work."
Conservative group leader Stuart Bradford said: "Our share of the vote has held up very well and we look forward to pressing ahead with our plans for Amber Valley."
Kate Smith, Liberal Democrat group leader, said: "We fielded as many strong candidates as possible in wards where we found ourselves up against the BNP."
The Liberal Democrats were beaten by the BNP in Ripley and Marehay, which was held by Labour.
The BNP failed to make further inroads. Councillor Lewis Allsebrook said: "We contested five seats but were realistic about our chances."
