West Hull road has 130 potholes in 200 yards: Call for urgent repairs

With more than 130 potholes in a road just 200 yards long, Eton Street is one of the most ravaged thoroughfares in Hull.

Some of the craters are four inches deep and three-feet wide yet nothing has been done since the winter weather six months ago.

Now shoppers are calling for urgent action to patch up the street off Hessle Road.

Terry Reece, of Sable Close, is a customer at the nearby Yorkshire Bank branch and uses the road three times a week.

He said: "There is no chance of avoiding the potholes on this road. It is a disgrace.

"It is only short and probably deemed a minor road by the council but it is very popular.

"I would say this must be one of the worst roads i Hull at the moment for potholes.

"I am very angry the council has done nothing about this for so long.

"These potholes must do so much damage to cars' tyres and suspension."

Camping store Winfields has a customer car park off Eton Street.

Manager Lee Allison explained that customers are constantly complaining about the state of the road.

He said: "The road is absolutely terrible.

"It is dangerous as motorists end up on the wrong side of the road to try and avoid the worst potholes.

"It isn't a big road but it is very busy. Our customers often speak to us about the state of it.

"It is awful for tyres and suspension.

"I would certainly urge the council to do something about it.

"They should have done something a long time ago."

Hull City Council told the Mail its team had only just been made aware of the problems on Eton Street.

A spokeswoman said: "We will go down and assess the extent of the damage and prioritise accordingly.

"We investigate any claims of damage, which can be reported by letter or through the call centre or website, caused by potholes or road defects."

Earlier this year Hull City Council announced it was losing a third of its "pothole busting" team.

Staff specifically employed to repair craters were made redundant as part of budget reductions.

The workers were all recruited in June 2009 as part of an 800,000 push to fix a backlog of pothole repairs.

From January last year to the beginning of December, the council filled in 7,308 potholes.
