Gedling proposes to axe summer weekly bin collection

A WEEKLY summer bin collection in Gedling Borough could be scrapped.

The council wants to axe weekly bin collections which have taken place over 12 weeks in the summer for the past four years.

The new Labour administration says it would use the 150,000 it would save for other services such as two hours free parking in town centre car parks.

Bins would be collected fortnightly, as they are throughout the rest of the year.

Councillor Paul Feeney, environment and sustainability portfolio holder, said: "The reality is the summer weekly bin service is expensive and underused. We want to use the money to support the services our residents are crying out for, such as a free parking period in our town centre car parks and develop recycling.

"The service was also unsustainable and environmentally damaging as it required the use of extra vehicles, causing more carbon emissions."

The council estimated that no more than 40 per cent of households used the service and the additional amount of waste collected was less than 100 tonnes per week from the 25,000 households on the rounds.

The service was introduced by the Conservatives when they controlled the council after complaints about maggots in bins in hot weather.

Mr Feeney added: "There are some very simple steps residents can take to prevent this from happening. They can be read about in our Contacts magazine and on our website."

The proposal to end the summer bin service will go before the council's cabinet on Thursday, June 2.
