In Brief

BRIDLINGTON: Residents are making a bid for traffic calming in their street.

Speeding drivers who use Eighth Avenue as a "rat run" are putting lives in danger, they claim.

Concerned residents fear it will only be a matter of time before somebody is killed or seriously injured.

Copies of their petition calling for a 20mph speed limit or speed cameras has been handed to the police and East Riding Council.

Resident Jim Ramsden said: "The cost of someone getting hurt or even killed would be so much greater than it would be to deal with the problem now."

It is hoped that the council's highways department will investigate the issue.

EAST YORKS: People are being urged to explore a dramatic landscape this bank holiday weekend.

A special bus service is available to take visitors to the remote wild and wonderful Spurn Point peninsula.

Bus company East Yorkshire Motor Services operates the Spurn Ranger (Service 73) during the summer months.

The mini bus service operates four return journeys between Withernsea, Patrington, Kilnsea and Spurn.

Adam Fowler, public transport officer, said: "People looking for something a bit different and an unforgettable experience with dramatic backgrounds should try the Spurn Ranger."

DRIFFIELD: Volunteers are needed to help out at a charity shop.

Children's charity Barnardos has launched the appeal for its shop in Middle Street South.

The call for help comes on the eve of national Volunteers Week from Wednesday, June 1 to Tuesday, June 7.

Donna Littlewood, Barnardos retail volunteering manager, said: "Volunteers will join with others in the shop who work together to help children to turn their lives around."

BEVERLEY: An exhibition by Cottingham-based artists Barry and Jill Carter is being staged at Beverley Art Gallery this summer.

The show, called Being There, is inspired by locations in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Barry favours landscapes and other outdoor locations, while Jill specialises in domestic interiors or the insides of pubs and clubs.

The gallery is hosting an open afternoon for the exhibition tomorrow, from 12.30pm to 2pm, when visitors can meet the artists.

The exhibition, at the gallery in The Treasure House, Champney Road, runs from tomorrow until Saturday, July 16.

MARKET WEIGHTON: Plans for a new sports facility have taken a step forward.

East Riding Council has given the go-ahead to an all-weather sports pitch at Market Weighton School in Spring Road.

The state-of-the-art synthetic turf pitch, with six flood lights and fencing, will be used for a variety of sports.

Sports development officers said it was an important move because there wasn't an artificial pitch in the area.

Market Weighton Sports Centre, which is also in the school grounds, will run the new facility.
