Youngsters gain industry insight

SCHOOLCHILDREN have been given advice on guiding them into the right jobs and education at an annual event.

Year 10 students from Hessle, Cottingham and Wolfreton schools visited The Consortium fair at the University Of Hull.

Businesses and organisations, including the Mail, had stands to show students what opportunities Hull and the East Riding have to offer.

One of the exhibitors was the Renewables Network, a business organisation that helps companies enter the green energy market.

The network's business development director Sam Pick said: "With the vast opportunities presented by renewable energy for the Humber region over the next 30 years, it's extremely important that young people develop an understanding of the skills and qualifications they will need for long-term careers. There are some fantastic training providers in the Humber area, offering an excellent range of apprenticeships, which are often the best route into this industry.

"It's crucial that young people speak with their careers advisers and find out how they can take advantage of these schemes."

Alison Harper, a careers adviser from Connexions, said: "The pupils have been really interested and came armed with loads of questions."

Students were able to ask questions about what qualifications would help them follow particular career paths and what skills employers were looking for.

Wolfreton School and Sixth Form College student Freya Chaytor, 14, said: "This has been very helpful. There were lots of people from all different companies."

Debbie Martindale, work experience co-ordinator for Hessle High School, said: "This event is a tempting bait for pupils.

"If they haven't decided on a career yet, this will be a good trigger."

Organiser Nicola Witherwick said: "This shows pupils what could be available to them and gives employers the chance to engage with students, which they don't often get the opportunity to do."

Other well-known companies represented at the event included Hull Truck, East Yorkshire Motor Services, the NHS, the Armed Forces, and East Riding Volunteer Action Services.
