WHEN Dave Longley saw youngsters begging on the streets of Mapusa in Goa, he was shocked by the poverty in the country.
Desperate to do something to help, he bought fruit for the children during his first visit to the country last year.
Now, he has returned armed with kit donated by Hull KR – the club he supports – which he gave to the Shekinah House orphanage.
It will be used by a football team that has just been set up there.
The east Hull man visited the country with friends including former Rovers player John Millington.
Mr Longley, 53, said: "The poverty was unbelievable in the country, though I was surprised by how clean they kept the orphanage and how the kids were always smiling.
"When they were given the shirts, they were so grateful and took a lot of care of them."
Now, the heavy goods driver is looking to raise funds to take over to the country next year to pay for a wish list drawn up by staff at the orphanage.
He said: "I want to raise a bit of money for when we go next year so I can go shopping with a few of the lads and buy some of the items they want.
"The list includes everyday items such as shoes, uniforms, lunch boxes and cups.
"I'm raising money as we can't take the stuff out there. It's easier to buy it when we are in India."
A Hull KR spokesman said: "The club was delighted to be able to donate the strips for Dave to take to India and give to the children in the orphanage.
"Dave is going out of his way to give something to these children who have nothing and the club is proud to be able to assist."
