Kings of the (sand) castle

BUILDING sandcastles may be a favoured pastime of young children.

But that did not stop people of all ages taking part in a sand art extravaganza on the East Yorkshire coast.

About 1,000 people flocked to Hornsea beach at the weekend to see East Riding- born sand artist Paul Hoggard in action.

On Saturday and Sunday, he and his partner Remy Geerts built an impressive mermaid, a dolphin and an elephant to mark KC's launch of its telecom services in the town.

From toddlers to grandparents, many took part in free sand-sculpting workshops and 20 people entered a sandcastle competition on the Sunday.

Within the simple theme of the sea, the entries ranged from a sea monster, dolphin, seal and octopus and there was even a dog with a bone and a sports car. Mr Hoggard, 45, who was born and raised in Beverley, said he was impressed by the display of talent.

He said: "I couldn't believe how much local talent there was. It was a great excuse to get families together.

"We use a range of tools in sand art, but your number one tool is imagination, followed by your hands."

Former Hymers College pupil Mr Hoggard now travels the world for his art.

He has created huge sculptures, including one using 300-tonnes of sand – a fairy- tale castle, built with ten other sculptors, which was bigger than three double- decker buses.

He said: "It sounds unbelievable, but I was 26 before I built my first sandcastle.

"This was the first time I've worked on a beach in East Yorkshire.

"Hornsea has good sand, but it's a stony beach so there isn't a lot of it.

"You have to adapt to the location you're working at."

The Revill-Nesbitt family's dolphin was crowned the best sandcastle of the day and won the 250 prize.

Full-time mum Sarah, 29, and joiner Gavin Revill, 32, of Victoria Avenue, Hornsea, spent around five hours working on their display with children Cole, 11, Chordi, 9, Tyla 8 and Frankee, 4.

Miss Revill said: "It was a good day out and the sun was shining. The kids really enjoyed themselves."
