A CLEAN-up operation is under way at a former Forest Town School devastated by fire earlier this week.
Structural safety experts from Mansfield District Council's building control section are overseeing the painstaking clearance of the old Sherwood Hall School off Stuart Avenue.
Council officers said the site "resembled ground zero" following the fire which was tackled by 40 firefighters at its peak.
Although the site is not owned or managed by the council, building control officers intervened in the interests of public safety after large amounts asbestos were discovered among the debris.
The costs of the clean-up will be met by the site owners.
The clearance operation must be carried out before what remains of the buildings is demolished.
The work is likely to take around three months.
The council has appointed Notts company, SWS Environmental Services Ltd to carry out clearance work, alongside DA Brooks Demolition Contractors.
