COUNCILLORS will be elected to 16 of Bassetlaw District Council's 48 seats this year, as it elects one third of its councils at a time.
These seats are currently held by nine Tory councillors, six Labour and one Independent.
Overall, the council has 23 Conservative, 22 Labour and three Independent members.
With the ruling Conservative group having just one more seat than Labour, both main parties have everything to play for.
Labour will be buoyed by four by-election wins since September 2010.
Labour held the council from 1979 until 2004. From 2004 to 2006 there was no overall control, but in 2006 the Conservatives took power with independent support. In the county elections in 2009, the Tories scored some notable victories over Labour, taking the seats of Retford East and Retford West.
The authority has made budget savings without redundancies. Regeneration projects such as a new cinema and improvements to Retford Town Square are in the pipeline.
There are calls for a "long overdue" new bus station in Worksop.
The Liberal Democrats are fielding just three candidates in these elections.
