With the NFL’s bye weeks ending, fantasy owners no longer need to start subpar players to replace stars who have the week off. That means that these three runners should be headed to the fantasy bench for Week 10:
Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh
The Steelers find themselves in the rare position of looking up in the standings at the Cincinnati Bengals, their Week 10 opponent. Even if the Bengals haven’t been quite as good as their 6-2 record, there’s no faulting the team’s No. 2-ranked run defense.
The Steelers aren’t going to run over a tough Bengals team on its home field, so don’t expect a lot of clock-killing fourth-quarter carries for Mendenhall. With few touches and a strong defense against him, it’s hard to see the Steelers’ feature back putting up numbers worth featuring.
Brandon Jacobs, NY Giants
With Ahmad Bradshaw still on the shelf, Jacobs will be the main man in the Giants running game once again. Unfortunately for him, he doesn’t get to face the suspect New England defense this week.
San Francisco boasts the No. 1 run defense in the NFL, with no individual back having topped 64 yards against them on the ground. Don’t expect Jacobs to buck that trend in what looks like a terrible road matchup for the Giants offense.
Cedric Benson, Cincinnati
The Bengals may be a winning team, but they’ve struggled to produce big-time fantasy numbers all year. Don’t expect that trend to change against the mighty Steelers defense.
Pittsburgh is sixth in the league against the run, and even at home, Benson isn’t going to have many holes to work with. He won’t be helped by the likelihood of the game going down to the wire, which could deprive him of key fourth-quarter touches.
