Chiefs vs Patriots: With Matt Cassel Out, Are Any Chiefs Worth Owning on Your Fantasy Team?

The Kansas City Chiefs are experiencing life without Matt Cassel as they trailed the New England Patriots 24-3 in the third quarter on Monday Night Football.

The Chiefs starting quarterback, Cassel, broke his hand in the Chiefs' Week 10 loss to the Denver Broncos. They're now led by Tyler Palko, who is making his first NFL start after being undrafted out of college in 2007.

Now playing with a quarterback who has only seen practice squads and sidelines during his NFL career, the fantasy prospects for the Chiefs offensive players are looking bleak for the rest of 2011.

All fantasy drafts this season saw All-Pro wide receiver Dwayne Bowe go off the draft board after the first few rounds. Bowe's value is now at an all-time low unless Palko finds a way to sling a pass to him for more than a 10 yards.

While Bowe has found his way into the end zone with several different mediocre quarterbacks throwing to him in his young career, Palko may prove to be a tough test of patience for Bowe owners the rest of the season.

One Chiefs wide receiver who has emerged as a valuable waiver-wire pickup has been Steve Breaston. Breaston has put together a nice season, catching 33 passes for 483 yards, and two touchdowns. Through three quarters against the Patriots, Palko connected with Breaston only twice for 34 yards.

After losing running back Jaamal Charles for the season after Week 2, the Chiefs' running duties have been shared by Jackie Battle, Thomas Jones, and Dexter McCluster. Battle has emerged as a decent flex option for desperate fantasy owners. He has averaged 4.6 yards per carry, and gained 406 yards this season.

After Cassel's season-ending injury, it appears that Dwayne Bowe is the only viable fantasy option on the Chiefs.
