WWE Survivor Series 2011 Results: Alberto Del Rio Deserves Another Title Shot

When the history of the 2011 Survivor Series is written, all the talk will be about The Rock and his return. But we should not forget the WWE championship match between Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk. It was the best pure wrestling match on the show, and a rematch would be a good thing for both competitors.

CM Punk had to win the match, given the story that was being presented on television—or at least what I assume they were trying to say, since it was never made clear. He will be a great champion because he is such a good talker and a terrific worker.

Del Rio, on the other hand, has never been given a chance to prove what he can do as champion. He may have held the title, but he was booked so badly that the fans gave up on him long before his reign began.

But with no clear direction for either Del Rio or Punk heading into the next pay-per-view, why not let them keep wrestling?

Raw general manager John Laurinaitis wants someone like Del Rio to have the belt because he is the kind of corporate champion that WWE can put on magazine covers. Punk is the anti-hero, the wrestler that the fans love because he does not care about being a poster boy.

The story is right there for WWE to tell and have some fun with. The problem is that the creative team—Vince McMahon—does not seem to understand that telling good stories is what sells pay-per-views and would rather bury everyone on the roster.

Del Rio deserves another chance to wrestle for the championship, not only because he hasn't been given a fair chance, but also because he and Punk had such great chemistry in the ring.

If WWE isn't going to give us good stories to get behind, the least they can do is give us great matches. Punk and Del Rio proved they can have great matches at Survivor Series, and they need to lock horns again at TLC.
