Pacquiao vs Marquez: Why Fight Must Meet Expectations To Help Boxing

Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez will meet for the third time on Saturday, and the boxing world needs this fight to be epic.

Boxing thrives on the success of their big stars, but in today's day and age, the big stars aren't quite what they used to be.

The sport has taken a backseat to football, but it still has a strong fan base, especially when a guy of Pacquiao's caliber is on the big stage.

There will be millions that tune in for Round 3 between Pacquiao and Marquez, but if the fight fails to live up to the hype it will hurt the future of boxing.

This isn't the fight fans want, but they're forced to watch it anyway. The drama is there because these two boxers have a great history together. However, the fight has to be a great one or it will be a bust.

The expectations are very high for Saturday's fight, and mainly for Pacquiao. He is the heavy favorite to win, as very few people are even giving Marquez a chance.

Should he lose to Marquez, there will be an outcry, and the chances of a super fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. would be unlikely.

Unless of course, Mayweather decides to jump at Pacquiao right after a loss, which would definitely get people talking.

The boxing world desperately needs a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather matchup because it has been anticipated for so long.

It remains to be seen if it will ever happen, but the outcome of Saturday's fight will have an impact on it.

It's no secret that people will watch this fight because of who is in it, and the fact that there's been controversy between these two.

The first time they fought, it ended in a questionable draw, and the second time they fought Pacquiao won with a split decision. Both times Marquez felt he should have won, which helps amp Saturday's fight up even more.

However, if it's a lackluster fight that fails to really wow people it will be a failure in the eyes of many.

This is a fight that needs to pop and gain even more interest for boxing. If Pacquiao wins in a dominant showing, his hype as the greatest will continue to build, which will frustrate Mayweather to no end.

The more people talk about Pacquiao, the less they mention Mayweather as the best in the world.

That will only happen if Pacquiao comes through and proves that he can handle Marquez with no problem. Mayweather did it two years ago, so Pacquiao must be able to do the same.
