Mayweather vs. Ortiz: Bout in Las Vegas Won't Live Up to HBO Series

Much has been made about Mayweather vs. Ortiz, part of HBO's 24/7 series.

The problem is Mayweather vs. Ortiz, the fight, won't live up to its billing.

One way the series will compare to the fight is that it's been entertaining so far. The sparrings in the TV show resemble the sparrings known as promotion before the fight.

But that is where the Mayweather saga has gone wrong.

In all reality, all boxing fans want to see now is Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, the only fight in boxing nowadays that could live up to its name. In fact, it would be a historic fight, and likely one of the greatest of this era.

What boxing fans don't want to see is Mayweather fighting tough foes, but foes who simply can't defeat him. I mean, Mayweather is 41-0 in his career, for crying out loud. It's pretty evident by now that most fighters don't stand a chance when they step in the ring with him.

All boxing fans are treated to now is a reality show, much like HBO's series, complete with outlandish gestures and overly-dramatic bravado. Boxing fans aren't treated to what the sport should be about, giving us some great fights.

That is where the sport has gone wrong, and will always go wrong, until we see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, the real reality show. It has become a sport based more on huffing and puffing before the fight than the actual competitive back-and-forth inside the ring. And people wonder why MMA is eclipsing boxing in popularity.

Boxing better hope HBO can keep putting entertaining shows like this out there, because, beyond that, there's not much to look at.
