Michael Vick Injury: Why Eagles Need to Lean on LeSean McCoy Sunday

Even if QB Michael Vick suits up on Sunday against the New York Giants, using him sparingly is going to be very crucial.

Coming off an injury like a concussion is arguably the most dangerous in all of sports, because it can do a lot of long-term damage from a mental perspective later in life.

As for the short-term, if he gets knocked around enough to get taken out of the game, it could be the single biggest factor in ruining the Eagles' season.

So, there are extremely vital cautions to be aware of in this game.

That being said, head coach Andy Reid must have Vick rely on the weapons surrounding him, and rightfully so, as they are some of the best in pro football.

But more specifically, RB LeSean McCoy.

Right now he is the key to the Eagles having any kind of success on offense and ultimately, the season.

For one he's a great dual-threat RB (rushing, receiving), but how his dynamic skills are utilized is the most important.

We're not talking just a handoff for a dive play or a quick toss to get outside.

Coach Reid must use screens, draws, counters, traps, and jet sweeps to fully take advantage of his athletic ability.

McCoy is one of the few RBs who is arguably just as dangerous in the ground game as he is receiving. Lining him up at WR, putting him in motion, and then getting him the rock on a jet sweep is just one of the many examples.

In addition, one formation that we may see on Sunday is the wildcat.

If there's a great use for RB Ronnie Brown right now, it's teaching LeSean McCoy how to properly execute when taking a direct snap.

Brown had some success while using it in Miami, but McCoy has the ability to take it to another level.

One other aspect he will be crucial in is the play-action, as well as fake screens.

Put any other RB in the backfield, line up McCoy as the slot WR, fake the bubble/quick screen (either one) then hand off to the RB for a quick and easy five yards.

These are only a few of the multiple ways that Michael Vick and Andy Reid can use LeSean McCoy.

Whether it's getting him the ball via handoff, toss, screen, check-down, jet sweep, or wildcat, he must become the biggest threat in Philly's offense.

Otherwise, defenses will drop seven back in coverage and allow their defensive line all day to get numerous coverage sacks.

If the Eagles can win games with Vick not being 100 percent, they just became that much more dangerous, because we know how threatening they are when he is fully healthy.
