If defense wins championships in the NFL today, it sure doesn't seem like it. Teams are scoring points at a record pace and there have never been more good quarterbacks in the league at one time.
More and more teams are leaning on their offense to win shootouts. In week 3, the following three teams will be among those that will win thanks to their powerful offense.
New England Patriots
The Patriots are the model of how successful a franchise can be leaning on a high-powered offense. Sure, they have had good defenses before, but their offense led by Tom Brady has been a constant.
Week 3 for will be no different. The Patriots will win their game thanks to an impressive offensive showing. The surprising part is that they will need every point to fend off the upstart Buffalo Bills. For once, the Bills have the power to stay with the Patriots to some degree.
New England has to be considered the favorite to come out of the AFC at this point and they will look the part in week 3 against the Bills.
New Orleans Saints
On the way to their Super Bowl win a couple of seasons back, the Saints took the Patriots' model and maximized it. Their defense was opportunistic and created a fair share of turnovers, but it was the offense that led the way.
They have continued this practice into 2011. The Saints still don't have very many defensive playmakers, but the offense can score points in bunches.
In week 3 against the Texans, the Saints will put on a virtuoso offensive performance in a win. Anything short of that and they will get beat. The Texans have a high-powered offense of their own and they probably have the advantage on the defensive side of the ball.
Detroit Lions
The Lions' fans are reacting to their new offense like a car driver who has just upgraded from a Ford Fiesta to a Rolls Royce Phantom. They are giddy with excitement over how well things have gone and they are floored by just how good their team might end up being.
That success will continue in week 3 when they take on the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings used to be an elite defense in the league, but those days appear to be over.
This will be a good barometer for just how good the Lions are. The Vikings aren't near the team they have been in the past, but they still have talent and they are battle-tested as a group. In past years, the Lions drop this game. This year, though, they will win in spectacular fashion.
