One of the most anticipated games of the NFL's opening week was a clash between AFC South rivals the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans. Now, the top player from each team has suffered a serious injury and both could miss Sunday's opener.
So much for a flashy Week 1 matchup.
Peyton Manning has officially been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Texans, and the Colts are left searching for an answer to the gigantic hole that now exists in their offense.
Meanwhile, Arian Foster's hamstring injury looks to be rapidly healing. Foster has been rehabbing and progressing well and the Texans say their star running back is currently day-to-day. If I had to bet one way or another, I would put money on Foster playing this Sunday. Still, I don't expect Foster to carry a full load for the Texans, as they will surely be cautious with the NFL's rushing leader from 2010.
With Foster and Manning not at the center of the game, the focus will shift to guys like Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson for the Texans and Reggie Wayne, Kerry Collins and Dallas Clark for the Colts. Forgive me for not being overly-enthusiastic to watch those guys play.
Foster could end up having a nice game for the Texans, but without Manning on the other side the sizzle is suddenly out of this one. It's just hard for me to get fired up about a Colts game without Manning's ridiculous flapping, gyrating and screaming at the line of scrimmage.
Something tells me Kerry Collins won't even attempt a Manning impression at the line on Sunday.
While the Week 1 clash between the Texans and Colts has big time implications for the AFC South chase this season, it has lost its luster as a must-see matchup thanks to the injuries to Manning and Foster.
