Top-25 rankings after Week 1 of a college football season mean nothing. Most of the time, top-notch schools square off against teams who don?t belong on the same field. As we dig deeper into the 2011 campaign, the match-ups as a whole will improve. Here are three teams that will expose themselves of not being as good as people think this weekend.
Penn State
Penn State gets their opportunity to showcase to the entire college football world that they are elite when they matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
There is just one problem ? Alabama is really good and Penn State isn?t as good as their No. 23 ranking suggests. They are average.
The Nittany Lions will get exposed this weekend on offense. Their offense won?t be able to produce the points needed against a fierce Alabama squad that gave up just 90 yards of total offense to Kent State last week.
Texas
The University of Texas defeated Rice 34-9 last Saturday in the opening game of the 2011 season. They face a BYU team that just defeated Mississippi on the road 14-13.
Texas may win this game, but it might be closer than people think. We may see a situation like Auburn last week when they dropped out of the Top 25 with a victory over Utah State.
Longhorns? quarterback Garrett Gilbert will get better as the season goes by, but he was just 13-23 with 239 yards and a touchdown last week.
He will need to have a better game to defeat BYU.
People suggest that Gilbert needs weapons around him to become that top-5 quarterback that people think he can be. Maybe it?s Gilbert, not the talent around him. He needs to prove himself before he gets known as being an overrated quarterback.
TCU
TCU is coming off a 50-48 defeat to Baylor in the opening game. They head to Air Force in hopes of getting back to .500 on the season.
The Horned Frogs are still in the Top 25 at No. 25, but their defense will get exposed by the rushing attack from Air Force. The Falcons ran for 391 yards in at 37-20 victory over South Dakota in Week 1.
TCU is the issue in the game. Maybe they aren?t as good as people think they should be. They lost Andy Dalton who won 42 games in his career at quarterback. He is more of a loss than people believe.
