The SEC is the current Kings of college football conferences. Their title has been well earned. However, this title and respect has led to many of their teams being overrated.
None more so than Auburn.
No. 1: Auburn
The Tigers are set up for a championship hangover of massive proportions. This team earned a 23rd ranking in the preseason polls, and proved quickly in their first game that they didn't deserve it.
They escaped with the win, but barely, and it came against a Utah State team they should have dominated.
This is a fatally flawed team that is weak in the trenches. They were dominated on the offensive and defensive lines by Utah State. As a result, Utah State took Auburn down to the wire, and although Auburn escaped with a victory, it is clear this team is nowhere near what it was last season.
Auburn allowed 448 total yards of offense in this game. 227 of those yards came via the ground game. Utah State went again and again to the ground game, and it kept working. They had a 4.3 yards per carry average on a whopping 53 carries.
This led to Utah State controlling possession. They led in time of possession by over 15 minutes.
No. 2: LSU
LSU had a crazy run in 2010. They narrowly escaped loss after loss in one zany way after another. They are due to suffer the reverse mojo from that run.
This football wheel of karma became apparent and started early when QB Jordan Jefferson was suspended.
LSU's defense will certainly keep them relevant and ranked, but this is not a top-10 team as their No. 4 preseason ranking suggests.
No. 3: Georgia
Georgia is coming off of a 6-7 season. They were embarrassed in the Liberty Bowl by UCF and they lost their best player in AJ Green. There is little there that suggest they deserve to be ranked in the top-25.
Mark Richt has been on a steady decline at Georgia since 2007. That decline is going to continue.
