A Closer Look At Tight End Fred Davis
With Chris Cooley’s knee giving him problems, it’s likely the star tight end won’t be on the field this week and may miss quite a few games this year. Backup Fred Davis had a great second half for fantasy owners in 2009, but with coach Mike Shanahan running the ship, it’s hard to know if Davis will be trusted with a full complement of snaps, should Cooley miss time.
To find out more, I contracted Rich Tandler of RealRedskins.com (he also writes for CSNWashington.com) to pick his brain about the odds of the Redskins cutting Davis lose for a full workload if he should start at tight end, this week. Tandler replied that Davis should be on the field throughout the game unless the team goes to a various packages like a four-receiver set, in which case you likely wouldn’t have a tight end on the field.
This is great news for those of you that have Davis stashed on your depth chart and are looking for an upside play this week against the Giants. New York has been killed by injuries on defense this past month and this weeks news of losing linebacker Jonathan Goff for the year is a killer. Look for Davis to take advantage as Washington is likely to throw the football.
I like Davis as a sleeper this year, and as Tandler points out in an article today about Davis, the young receiver came into camp 12 pounds lighter and wanted to become a student of the game. While Davis had a quite preseason, fantasy owners should give him serious consideration on the waiver wire as he is still only owned in just over 1 percent of ESPN leagues, and 1 percent of Yahoo leagues.

Kenny Britt’s Hamstring Close to 100 Percent?
The Titans are expected to turn Kenny Britt loose (hamstring) on Sunday against the Jaguars.
Fantasy Impact: Britt is a very talented receiver, but his off-field problems and hamstring issues have derailed what could be a bright future. It looks like Britt won’t face any suspension time for his minor off-field law troubles, but it’s his hamstring problems that fantasy owners need to worry about now. Thankfully it looks like Britt is ready to role this week, and makes for a respectable WR-3 play against the Jaguars.

Should Fantasy Owners Be Concerned About the Steelers' Secondary?
With James Harrison still recovering from back surgery this offseason, it looks like fans are starting to grow concerned about the Steelers' pass secondary and success on defense.
Fantasy Impact: As Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette points out in the tweet found below, as always it will be imperative that the Steelers generate a solid pass rush to help the secondary. That is usually the formula for success in Pittsburgh as they tend to have an average secondary (outside of a healthy Troy Polamalu of course) and it’s up them to not give up the big plays down the field.
For that to happen, pass rushers like Harrison and LaMarr Woodley need to create pressure. While Woodley should be solid, it will be up to the Steelers' depth to help out if Harrison should miss time.
Don’t be surprised if someone steps up off the edge, as Pittsburgh has done a fine job over the years of drafting for depth at the linebacker positions. They know where their bread is buttered and linebackers are very important to Steeler Nation. This group should remain an elite top three defense until further notice.

Manning Undergoes Third Neck Surgery
The Colts will likely be without Peyton Manning for a significant amount of time after he had his third neck surgery today in the past year and a half.
Fantasy Impact: If you’ve followed the Fantasy Philosophers Podcast in recent years, you know what our thoughts are about delaying your fantasy draft for as long as possible before this season. Manning’s third neck surgery is a prime example of why it’s a good idea to hold off until the final week of the summer to draft, as in recent days, Manning’s outlook has been down for the odds of a full season.
Manning went as far as to say that as long as everything goes well, his doctor have informed him he should be ready (view tweet below) for next year.
This news is also a blow to Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie and Dallas Clark as the Colts tend to look like a different team when Manning is off the field. It could be a long season in Indianapolis.
