SHOPPERS at a Notts supermarket are being offered the chance to buy milk in bags – in a bid to cut waste packaging by 75 per cent.
Instead of using cartons or plastic bottles, the refill bags are poured into a plastic jug, known as a Jugit, and kept in the fridge.
Customers and colleagues at Asda in West Bridgford tested the jugs out at the weekend and sales performed well.
Each customer in Nottingham who switches to Jugit will use three quarters less packaging than a regular milk bottle. The jugs all use Dairy Crest's Country Life milk.
John Middleton, senior brand manager at Dairy Crest, said: "We were delighted by the reaction of Asda customers in Nottingham to Jugit.
"It is an easy way for families to reduce waste in a practical way and the bags can be frozen, are as durable as traditional milk bottles and provide great tasting, sustainable milk.
"It's early days for us at Asda in West Bridgford but long term I'm sure we can help local families reduce the problem of packaging waste."
Chris Rafferty, Asda store manager, said: "Anything that helps our customers reduce waste packaging has got to be a good thing and customers were certainly positive about Jugit at the weekend.
"Once you try it you can see how easy it is, so we're going to have demonstrators pop in at regular intervals this month to show customers how they can reduce waste but don't have to compromise on quality."
Two-pint Country Life milk bags will cost 80p and, until May 24, customers can buy two for 1.50 and receive a free Jugit worth 1.98.
