Police arrest man on suspicion of Jia Ashton murder

DETECTIVES have arrested a man on suspicion of murdering Thorntons worker Jia Ashton.

Officers swooped on a flat above an Indian restaurant in Derby Road, Heanor, yesterday.

The 22-year-old remained in police custody last night.

Four other men were questioned as witnesses, while the restaurant and flats were examined by forensic officers. Joan Brown, who lives nearby, said: "I am very shocked. It was quite frightening."

Neighbours and workers from shops close by believe the arrested man moved into the flat recently and had been working locally.

Jia was killed in Sleetmoor Woods, Somercotes, on March 10, shortly after she left work at the nearby Thorntons factory. Her body was found three days later, close to a path she regularly used to walk home, known locally as the "Yellow Brick Road".

A post-mortem examination revealed Jia died as a result of an attack and that she had suffered trauma to her face and head.

Police said that she was not sexually assaulted.
