Katsina is the toast of Notts talent

YOUNG people from Notts have been rewarded for their creative talents.

Their work ranged from a CD cover made to look like a slice of cheese on toast to a piece of photography featuring small figures in the Old Market Square.

Thirteen prizes as well as accolades for runners-up were handed out at the Young Creative Awards. They included the overall Young Creative of the Year gong, won by Katsina Whitchurch.

The 17-year-old from Bingham produced a cover for a CD by a Christian band.

She managed to make the cover appear like a slice of cheese on toast, which pulled apart in the middle to access the CD.

"It took a fair bit of research," said the South Nottingham College graphic design student.

"Overall I managed to get everything done in a couple of weeks. I was very pleased with the outcome, and even more happy to have won."

She also won the graphics award for 14 to 17-year-olds.

This was the third year the awards had been held.

This year's theme was music. More than 100 entries were received in six categories – photography, music, short film, creative writing, visual arts and graphics.

The judges, made up of an independent panel of experts, looked for work that fitted the brief, showed innovation and creativity, with good presentation and evidence of how the ideas were developed.

Gareth Sands, 16, of Bilborough, won the photography award in the 14 to 17 category.

His work was made up of figures of Army men which were placed on a board. He then took shots of the Old Market Square as background.

"It took a while to get everything right," said Gareth, a fine art student at New College Nottingham. "I am very happy to get the award."

Joseph Mercer-Holland, 18, of Ilkeston, picked up a special award in the film category for his work, called Levy Flight.

"I didn't think I had got an award, then was really pleased when I found out I had," he said. "My film was basically an experimental piece which used locations throughout Nottingham."

Emieko Roberts, 18, of Strelley, won the film category for 18 to 22-year-olds. He produced a music video to go with a Christian rap song.

"I shot on location in places like the Arboretum," he said. "I put a lot of thought into what would go with the music. I'm really pleased to have won."

The event was organised by Nottingham City Council and One Nottingham with the help of sponsors.

Nigel Cooke, director of One Nottingham, said: "This year's winners clearly demonstrate the fabulous ingenuity and humour of our young designers, artists and musicians.

"The standard set by last year's awards was very high and it looks as though this year's entrants have risen to the challenge."
