In Brief

HULL: Plans to turn the former LAs nightclub into a youth facility have been backed by councillors.

The 6.2 million event and activity centre for young people will provide a performance venue, workshops, dance studios, sports areas, office space and a caf.

Activities for young people aged 13 to 19 will include art, dance, drama, music and filming.

At a meeting of the planning committee, councillors said it is the "ideal location".

But despite gaining planning permission, the project still relies on further funding.

The venture is looking for 5 million from the Big Lottery.

A spokeswoman for Building Schools For The Future, which is behind the plans, said: "Although this is great news, we still need to have funding in place. We hope full planning permission will allow us to take our plans forward."

BEVERLEY: An exhibition by Cottingham-based artists Barry and Jill Carter will be on display at Beverley Art Gallery this summer.

'Being There' is inspired by locations in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Mr Carter favours landscapes and other outdoor locations. His wife specialises in domestic interiors or the insides of pubs or clubs.

On Saturday, May 28, the gallery will be hosting an Open Afternoon for the exhibition, from 12.30pm to 2pm and visitors can meet the artists and gallery staff.

The exhibition, at the Gallery in The Treasure House, in Champney Road, runs from Saturday, May 28, to Saturday, July 16. For visitor information, call 01482 392780.
