How to nominate Hull heroes to carry the Olympic torch

HULL people with inspirational backgrounds could be nominated to carry the Olympic torch through the city's streets.

The 2012 Olympics committee are looking for people with inspirational stories – not just from sporting backgrounds – to carry the torch.

A website to send applications to went live this morning.

Mitch Upfold, who put together Hull's torch bid, said: "I would hope the Olympics committee would select regional celebrities to carry the torch in their home towns.

"People of Hull now have a lot of time to apply or nominate someone.

"There will be a Yorkshire panel who will pick names from the list of applicants. "The panel will be looking for inspirational people, someone with a story to tell.

"It doesn't follow that they will only be accepting ex-sports heroes.

"It is the story behind the person that they are looking for, so there are all sorts of possibilities."

Nominations must be sent in by June 29, and individuals are allowed to put forward more than one person.

Those wishing to fill in the online form must know the correct name, address and contact details of the person they are nominating and must prepare 150 words explaining why they are inspirational.

After all the entries have been received, a shortlist of potential torch bearers will be put through a ballot process. Twelve judging panels around the UK will then decide which stories they think have the power to inspire the world.
