Manny Pacquiao: Is He Too Distracted to Focus on Juan Manuel Marquez Fight?

This weekend, Manny Pacquiao takes on Juan Manuel Marquez for the second time.  The last time these two fought was in 2008 where Pacquiao won a split decision against Marquez; this followed their first bout which was a draw.  Pacquiao has not had a split decision since and has won each of those fights by unanimous decision, knockout or by TKO.

There was an era in boxing where fights like these were a huge deal.

There was a point in time when we would turn in to Sports Center just to see the weigh-in and press conference to see the trash talk back and forth.

However, this seems like this is just another fight.

Since when has a big rematch for a big fight just been ordinary?  I can vividly remember wanting to see Holyfield-Tyson II after Holyfield’s stunning knock out of Tyson and despite the fight being disappointing (this is the one where Tyson bit Holyfield’s ear) the build up for the fight was incredible.

However, this fight seems to be more like an afterthought.

There is one fight the world wants to see, and unfortunately, it’s not Pacquiao and Marquez.  For years now, the camps for Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have gone back and forth about a fight between the two.  Issues like urine testing, Olympic blood testing and drug allegations have kept this super fight from happening.

However, the rumors about this fight still persist, boxing fans are hoping that May 5, 2012 will be the day, and these two camps keep going back and forth at one another.

Amidst the controversy between Money Mayweather and Pacquiao, you have to wonder if Pacquiao is prepared for this fight.  Pacquiao has been dominating his fights.  Every time he steps in between the ropes it’s not a question of who will win but what round Pacquiao will allow the fight to go to.  However, he faces an opponent that has faced him twice, one who has given Pacquiao a challenge in each of the two fights.

Mayweather is the big feud right now and a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight could be the last big fight in all of boxing.  Pacquiao must be cautioned not to sleep on Marquez.  Marquez is 38 years old, but has Pacquiao scouted out from their previous two fights.  If Pacquiao wastes his time focusing on Mayweather, Marquez could score a monumental upset.
