North Ferriby adventurer reaches Everest summit at second attempt

IT TOOK two attempts and an enormous amount of effort.

But East Yorkshire adventurer Andrew Robertson has reached the top of the world.

Andrew, 39, stepped on to the summit of Mount Everest after an expedition spanning several weeks.

The peak is the world's highest mountain and can be found in the Himalayas on the Nepal-China border.

This was Andrew's second attempt at conquering Everest and, after being hampered by bad weather conditions last year, this was his first successful summit of the 8,850-metre peak.

His mother, Susan Robertson, of North Ferriby, said: "I'm very proud of him, we're really excited."

Andrew, who grew up in North Ferriby and attended South Hunsley School, worked as a chartered accountant in London before taking redundancy last year to pursue his dream of conquering Everest.

He has previously climbed mountains including Aconcagua, in the Andes mountain range, the highest peak in South America in 2008, and Mount Cho Oyo in Bangladesh, the world's sixth highest mountain, in 2009.

The accountant climbed Mount Everest on a professionally organised expedition with Adventure Peaks, a Lake District climbing firm.

They reached the summit via the mountain's North Ridge, an immensely difficult climb that is seen as more difficult than the alternative South Col route.

Conquering Mount Everest meant surviving the "Death Zone", an area of altitude above 8,000 metres, in which human beings are unable to survive without supplementary oxygen.

Andrew's family managed to keep in touch with him during his dangerous climb via his online Internet blog.

Mrs Robertson, 65, said: "He didn't take his phone this time because he ran up an enormous bill in his last attempt, but we have been kept up to date via an internet blog and the team's updates on Twitter."

The grandmother said she and her husband Alistair Robertson, a retired GP, had no idea what her son, who is currently making his way down from the Everest summit, would take on next.

She said: "I dread to think what he will do next.

"But we're really proud of him and can't wait to see him."
