Blood brothers' award

TWO brothers have been praised for selflessly giving blood over four decades.

Eric and Jim Morris, both of east Hull, were recognised for their dedication in rolling up their sleeves to help save lives at a ceremony.

Each blood donation can potentially save the lives of up to three people.

If a donor has given 75 blood donations, they could have helped save the lives of up to 225 patients.

Both Eric and Jim have given blood at least 75 times and said they were delighted to be among a group of donors to receive a crystal bowl from the National Blood Service in recognition of their efforts.

Jim, 62, said: "Something really struck me when we went to the function in York.

"There was a girl there who had all sorts of problems and she was only about 35.

"She needed dozens of pints of blood to save her life and she has lived to see her children grow up.

"She stood up and told us what good we were doing. It really brought it home to me.

"Seeing her that day made me think 'I'm not going to give up until I have to'."

Eric, 60, said he gives blood because he likes helping others.

He said: "I see it as it's costing me nothing and it's helping people.

"It's an achievement. It's great just thinking you might have helped save someone's life."

Darren Bowen, lead donor relations manager for the National Blood Service, praised the brothers and other donors.

He said: "All our donors are special, but it is a pleasure to thank our dedicated donors in this way.

"They continue to make time to donate come rain or shine and really are the lifeblood of our service."
