Philadelphia Phillies' Second Baseman Freddy Galvis Suspended 50 Games

As if things couldn't get any worse in a season where the Philadelphia Phillies have been beaten, battered and bruised, the hits just keep on coming.

According to an official tweet from Major League Baseball, Phillies' second baseman Freddy Galvis has been suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a banned substance. The suspension will begin immediately.

Galvis came into the season ranked as the Phillies' sixth-best prospect by the esteemed prospect gurus at Baseball America, and after making the transition from shortstop to second base during spring training, he took over at second for the Phillies following the news that Chase Utley would not be ready to open the regular season on the 25-man roster.

Though his offense was shaky at times, Galvis proved to be one of the Phillies' most productive hitters this season, posting a slash line of .226/.254/.363. Despite the questionable line, Galvis collected 43 hits including 15 doubles, a triple and three home runs.

It was his glove that helped him make noise in the minor leagues throughout his professional career, and he certainly didn't disappoint with the leather at the MLB level. According to Baseball-Reference, Galvis posted a dWAR of 1.4. For comparison's sake, Jimmy Rollins' dWAR this season is -0.2.

Galvis has been out of action since June 6. During a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Galvis appeared to injure himself swinging the bat. After a couple of swings, he was removed from the game.

It would later be revealed that Galvis suffered an injury known as a Pars fracture. It is a crack in the vertebra with a lengthy healing process. The second baseman could be in a back brace for as long as six weeks and there is currently no timetable on his return from injury.

Galvis' suspension will expire on Aug. 8 as the Phillies take on the Atlanta Braves.
