With the NBA draft approaching, we at BR5 figured we’d take a look back on some of the NBA’s biggest draft regrets—those moments that franchises look back on and just shake their heads with shame. Here are the five biggest draft regrets.

 

Number 5

In 2007, the Portland Trail Blazers chose Greg Oden over Kevin Durant. The conventional wisdom says to always take the best available big man, but after taking a big man over arguably the best ever a generation before (number one on this list), you’d think the Blazers would have learned their lesson…apparently not.

 

Number 4

In 1998, the Milwaukee Bucks traded away their early-first-round pick to the Dallas Mavericks for two of their first-rounders. The Mavericks used that pick from Milwaukee to select Dirk Nowitzki. Milwaukee went on to select Robert “Tractor” Traylor. He has an awesome name, but looking back, the Bucks probably wish they’d held on to that pick.

 

Number 3

In 2003, the Detroit Pistons selected Darko Milicic with the second-overall pick that they acquired from Memphis. Still on the board after Detroit’s selection: Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade and Carmelo Anthony. Darko got a ring with Detroit in their eventual title run. Regardless, not having anyone of those great players has to keep fans in the Motor City up at night.

 

Number 2 

In 1996, the Charlotte Hornets traded Kobe Bryant to the Los Angeles Lakers for Vlade Divac. There’s a rumor out there that Kobe’s agent told the Hornets Kobe would never play with them. Regardless of how or why, the Hornets would keep Kobe if they could do it all over again.

 

Number 1

One of the most infamous misses in NBA Draft history. No surprise, the Portland Trail Blazers were involved. With the second-overall selection in 1984, the Blazers went with Sam Bowie, leaving someone named Michael Jordan for the Chicago Bulls. Heard of him? Also left on the table that year by Portland: Charles Barkley and John Stockton.
